Discovery Science Place - Tyler, Texas

Tyler, Texas is home to Discovery Science Place, a museum designed to teach children about math, science, and technology using a ‘hands on’ approach. GestureTek’s Cube system - a turnkey, plug and play portable interactive floor display system - has become the latest addition to an interactive gallery within Discovery Science Place called “Discovery Zone”. The Cube projects an image on the floor and as the visitors approach and interact, their movements and gestures transform the projected images.

Michael Shanklin, Executive Director at Discovery Science Place, chose GestureTek’s Cube system after experiencing GestureTek’s interactive floor in action at the Ontario Science Centre. “Upon seeing how children interacted with the technology, I was very impressed with their level of engagement and the uniqueness of the technology,” says Shanklin.

With a target audience of children between the ages of 4-13 and their families, the objective of Discovery Science Place with the Cube system is to attract guests to “Discovery Zone” while increasing the amount of time they spend at the exhibit. According to Shanklin, the Cube has created an impressive degree of interaction by users.  The pre-installed games and applications that come included with the system keep visitors intrigued and inspire them to interact at the exhibit for longer than they otherwise would.

“The outcome and ongoing visitor response to this instalment is fantastic. Traffic to the “Discovery Zone” has increased, as have sales and gross profit,” adds Shanklin.  He estimates that several thousand people have visited the new exhibit since its opening.

“The Cube has proven to be highly appealing to our guests, and as a result, I anticipate more installations like this in the future as a way of ensuring that our visitor attendance continues to see growth.”
