GestureTek’s Space-Age ScreenFX Interactive Display Technology Brings Life to The Stargate Portal.

July 2008 – The 2008 San Diego Comic Convention is one of North America’s largest comic book conventions and a showcase for studios to promote their upcoming projects and brings fans face-to-face with their favorite television programs in the science fiction and fantasy genres.  Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, in conjunction with MGM Pictures, contracted with GestureTek to create and integrate interactive video effects onto a nine-foot-tall replica of the portal from the television program Stargate.  GestureTek’s patented ScreenFX system was used to deliver an impressive dynamic multi-media experience for users.

ScreenFX is GestureTek’s patented, camera-based motion-controlled interactive display system that actually looks out at the surrounding area from behind a screen, using sophisticated body tracking technology to capture the movement of people nearby.  People are mesmerized as the display intelligently identifies every gesture they make, and responds creatively with dazzling interactive images and special effects.  Passers-by instantly notice that simple body movement such as the sweep of an arm creates magical changes to the screen’s graphical content.

The Stargate replica portal was installed on an exciting staging area, complete with large video screens showcasing footage from the television program, along with two costumed characters from the show who oversaw the proceedings.  Visitors were given the opportunity to interact face-to-face with the portal that mimicked the inter-dimensional transport seen in the show.  The experience culminated with exclusive video of one of the show’s stars.  If the fan was lucky, they would be told that they had won a prize, which would be presented by one of the costumed characters.
