GestureTek Multi-Touch Tables Transform the Visitor Experience in Parks Canada Historic Site

Parks Canada operates Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site of Canada just north of present day Winnipeg, Manitoba. The site wanted an innovative high-tech interactive tool to share multi-media information about the history of the site and the fur trade.

Parks Canada decided to install two GestureTek Illuminate® multi-touch tables in the Visitors Center, with the intent to draw more people into a large Diorama Gallery and provide them with an entertaining and memorable learning experience.

Visitors can access four main themes by touching or pointing their finger immediately above the menu options that interest them.  Themes include the fur trade, the architecture of stone fort trading posts, transportation and Treaty 1, the first of the numbered treaties signed between First Nations and the Crown in western Canada. Each theme allows users to select menu options to view text, photos, prints, and short videos. Visitors use their hands as the control interface instead of a button, mouse or touch pad.

“People of all ages gravitate to the tables, but particularly the ‘under 30’ crowd, who tend to respond even more enthusiastically to this sort of gesture-driven interactivity on a visual screen,” says Paul Legris, Senior Interpretive Planner with Parks Canada.

“I’m very excited about the technology, and I hope to work with GestureTek again should we move forward on future rollouts of multi-touch tables to other historic locations,” says Legris.
