Interactive Multi-Touch Virtual Graffitti Wall Drives In-Theatre Advertising

Xenium ( is a technology solutions provider specializing in user and interface design for digital signage, location-based entertainment and augmented reality environments. The company is also the strategic dealer for GestureTek’s gesture control technology in India.

When Godrej launched a new social networking site they turned to Xenium to conceptualize and design an interactive virtual graffiti wall that would entertain users, promote the Godrej brand and generate registrations to the new website.
The advertising concept allowed people to express their dreams and aspirations in an novel and non-damaging way. The venue for the advertising campaign was the mall inside a theatre lobby.

“Graffitti as an art form has always been associated with freedom of expression,” says N.MD. Parveez, General Manager of Xenium Technologies. “We gave movie-goers a canvas to express themselves, forget about their real-world issues and get lost in a dream – all without destroying property or breaking the law.”

Using GestureTek’s Illuminate Multi-Touch Display as the surface computing hardware for the graffiti wall and a basic painting application that came with the system, Xenium customized the graffiti-painting application to give more creativity and control to the user.  The multi-touch surface transforms into the user’s canvas of choice. Cans with switch buttons controlling infrared LEDs are used as virtual spray cans.  Everything, from brush size, to color, to the length of time the creation stays on the wall, is controlled by the end-user. A digital white wash application clears the canvas at any time to give the user a fresh start.

“The final installation was surprisingly intuitive, much like putting a box of crayons in front of a 2 year old.  People had lots of fun with it.  Many even took pictures with their masterpieces,” says Parveez.

The end result, however, was about far more than user delight.  The virtual graffiti wall advertising campaign generated 25,000 registrations to in 4 days, 60% of which are from around the activity area.

The interactive experiential display was simple, beautiful and effective –exactly what the technology should be.
