Illuminate® Surface Systems

Illuminate Technical Support FAQs

If you have problems or questions, please contact: or by telephone at:
416 340 9290 ext. 225. You can also contact GestureTek Support.

Q: Can any TUIO application be downloaded from an Open Source site to work on GestureTek’s Illuminate surfaces, and what are the specific parameters that must be met?

Illuminate tracker technology supports the standard TUIO 2D Cursors. Because GestureTek follows the TUIO standard, in most cases an app-lication that is running on the Windows PC on a GestureTek Illuminate surface will receive the 2D Cursor data correctly. Note that GestureTek cannot guarantee that all TUIO applications will run. Any TUIO product found not to work with GestureTek Illuminate surfaces will need to be supported by the TUIO developers as GestureTek does not support 3rd party applications.

The TUIO protocol standard is defined in:
TUIO: A protocol for table-top tangible user interfaces, Kaltenbrunner, M; Bovermann, T; Bencina, R; Costanza, E , Proc. of the The 6th International Workshop on Gesture in Human-Computer Interaction and Simulation, 5/1/2006, (2005)

Q: Can a TUIO application run on a machine other than the one running the Illuminate Tracker?

Following the OSC standard, GestureTek Illuminate surfaces can support sending TUIO data over the network using UDP.

Q: I can’t get the system to work.  What should I do before I call GestureTek Technical Support for troubleshooting assistance?

If the projector doesn’t power up, check the power to the projector.  If there is power to the projector, check the connections on the Illuminate computer.  Reboot the computer and test interaction.  If difficulty still persists, call Technical Support (noting any indicator lights on the projector, if applicable).

Q: What programs can I use when creating content for use with Illuminate?
A: Any multi-media program can be used: Director, Flash (including Flash SDK), HTML, etc.  Design guidelines can be found here.

Can I install Illuminate systems on my own computer system?
A: Generally, we prefer to maintain stringent quality control by providing the computer.  In some cases, we can install the system on a client’s system if they send us their computer (See GestureTek PC Certification).  A technician is also required for installation.

Q: Can GestureTek’s interactive multi-touch solution be delivered on any surface, horizontal or vertical?
A: GestureTek has the capability to deliver multi-touch on both horizontal and vertical surfaces, although rigid requirements exist.  Site evaluation and technical consultation is mandatory for clients considering a vertical multi-touch interactive solution.  The multi-touch table can be purchased turnkey.

Q: Can GestureTek’s library of special effects be integrated with GestureTek’s multi-touch software?
A: GestureTek has the capability to integrate our complete library of special effects into our multi-touch surface computing systems, although preconditions exist.   Project evaluation and technical consultation is mandatory for clients considering this option.
